Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel and function like natural teeth. The person who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat virtually anything and can smile with confidence, knowing that teeth appear natural and that facial contours will be preserved. The implants are tiny titanium posts, which are placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. In addition, implants can help preserve facial appearance by preventing jawbone deterioration, which occurs when teeth are missing.
It is possible to reconstruct the mouth with a combination of crowns, bridges, implant restorations, and dentures. The new restorations are designed and based on each patient’s unique jaw movements. Once the work has been completed, you experience a long-term result that looks great, and functions like a well-oiled machine as the new teeth are designed to work in perfect harmony with their jaw joints. Patients are also able to avoid all the negative changes (severe bone erosion, loss of chewing function, pain on chewing, etc.) that occur when teeth are removed and dentures are placed.
Prosthodontists are dental specialists in the restoration and replacement of teeth. After completing four years of dental school, prosthodontists receive three additional years of specialized training in an American Dental Association (ADA) accredited graduate education program.
